The week of October 4 to October 11, 2026 belonged to Maryland life sciences and Northern Virginia defense hardware. A Herndon defense startup closed a $17.5M round to move its balloon-launched glider into production, while five Maryland companies, from a Germantown cell therapy developer to a Frederick advanced materials maker, raised money through notes, SAFEs and equity. We did not find a verified, newly announced venture round for a DC-based startup this week, and three of the six deals below surfaced only through SEC Form D filings, so amounts and investors are thinner than usual.

Deal notes

Aventra raises $17.5M to scale Piranha in Herndon

Aventra builds Piranha, an autonomous precision payload system that rides high-altitude balloons and stratospheric winds to carry payloads long distances before onboard autonomy finishes the mission. According to citybiz, Konvoy led the round, existing backer Lavrock Ventures returned, and Booz Allen Ventures, Sands Capital and Langford Industries joined, with Western Alliance Bank adding a funding facility. The money goes to low-rate initial production, more manufacturing capacity in Herndon, new hires and more flight testing.

Seraxis closes $11.2M ahead of its BetaNova merger

Germantown-based Seraxis grows pancreatic islet cells from stem cells under cGMP manufacturing, led by its SR-02 program and a gene-edited follow-on called SR-03. BioBuzz reports the non-brokered financing of convertible notes and warrants is expected to convert into stock of BetaNova Biotherapeutics once Seraxis completes its merger with Sernova. No lead investor was named; insider Dr. Steven Sangha through Arlo Investments, management of both companies, existing shareholders and new investors took part.

Templar Nova files a $7M equity raise

Templar Nova, a Rockville biotechnology company incorporated in Delaware in 2026, filed a new Form D on October 7 reporting a fully sold $7M equity offering. The filing lists a first sale date of September 28 and two investors, none of them non-accredited. The company has not publicly described its science or named its backers, so we will watch for a formal announcement.

InventWood raises $1.49M in SAFEs

InventWood makes Superwood, a reengineered wood material the company describes as up to ten times the strength-to-weight of steel with a Class A fire rating. Its new Form D, filed October 8, reports $1,491,000 in SAFEs sold toward a $5M offering, with a first sale on September 25 and two investors so far. InventWood grew out of University of Maryland research and is based in Frederick.

ColoWatch reports $975,000 toward a $3M raise

ColoWatch, a Gaithersburg health care company incorporated in Maryland in 2023, filed a new Form D on October 8. It reports $975,000 sold from eight investors toward a $3M offering of debt paired with an option to acquire equity, with the first sale on September 24. The company has not published details about its product, and investors were not named.

SereNeuro closes pre-seed and lands its first NIH grant

SereNeuro Therapeutics, a 2024 Johns Hopkins spinout in Baltimore, is developing SN101, an injection of pain-sensing neurons that the company calls a pain sponge for arthritic joints. Technical.ly reports the company declined to share the size of its oversubscribed pre-seed round and also won a $318,000 Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health. The team plans a November meeting with the FDA to start the formal development process.

What this week signals

Maryland carried the deal count. Five of the six deals came from Maryland, and four of those were health or life sciences companies along the I-270 corridor and in Baltimore. That matches the state's long-running strength in biotech, and the way these companies raised money is worth noting: convertible notes, SAFEs and debt with equity options rather than priced venture rounds. Founders are using flexible instruments to bridge to milestones such as a merger close, an FDA meeting or first production.

Northern Virginia stayed on its defense track. Aventra's round adds to a string of regional defense hardware raises this fall, and the investor list, which mixes venture funds, an investment firm and a federal contractor's venture arm, shows how broad the defense tech investor base has become. Expect more Herndon, Arlington and Chantilly companies to raise production capital as programs move from prototype to fielding.

DC was quiet. We found no verified, newly announced startup round in the District this week. Quiet weeks are common, and they are a reminder that a lot of local capital formation shows up first in SEC filings rather than press releases. If your company closed a round and has not announced it, StartDMV wants to hear from you.

Finally, a note on method. Three of this week's deals come only from Form D filings, which report what was sold but rarely who invested or what the company builds. We list them because they are real capital moving into DMV startups, and we will update these entries when the companies share more.
