What to expect

The Freedom Startup is hosting a small evening meetup in Herndon for people interested in building useful, profitable businesses that give their founders more freedom, rather than chasing venture funding. The group is capped at about 15 people. The organizers say there will be no pitches, no panels, no keynote speakers and no networking games: just a conversation over pizza.

The discussion is organized around three questions:

  • What does freedom look like for you? More time, more independence, or more control over your work.
  • What problems are worth solving? Problems you have noticed at work, in your industry or in daily life that customers might pay to fix.
  • What is one small step forward? A customer conversation, an experiment or an idea worth testing.

Attendees are encouraged to bring an idea, a challenge or simply curiosity, and to leave with one practical next step.

Who should attend

You do not need to work in tech. The listing names small business owners, consultants, software developers, people with a side project and anyone who has been thinking about starting something. It is a good fit for a bootstrapping founder who wants a small group setting rather than a large networking event. The host is Sze Wong, founder of Zerion Software and creator of iFormBuilder, who writes about customer funded businesses at thefreedomstartup.com.

Venue and access

The meetup is at Cove Collective, 427 Carlisle Dr Ste A, Herndon, VA 20170.
